Applying Lessons Learned in Harsh Environments

DRS has fielded more rugged computers in the most severe environments than any company. DRS has extensive experience developing systems that meet and exceed military requirements and survive extremely harsh environments around the globe. Here's one example of a "lesson learned" and our response to it. Everyone knows that connector covers keep out water and dust. But we learned that in the field, covers can be left open. That's why we seal connectors on the inside so that protection against water and dust is always maintained. Speaking of rugged, the market is characterized by a degree of confusion about the meaning of the term rugged. Certain ratings, such as ingress protection, may be used to gauge specific performance criteria. And there are categories like "semi-rugged" that are not easily defined. Users should carefully evaluate levels of protection in light of the specific environment in which the computer will be deployed.
