Applying Lessons Learned in Harsh Environments

DRS has fielded more rugged computers in the most severe environments than any company. This experience has given us unique insights into how to make computing systems survive and deliver optimal performance. These "lessons learned" have led to many design enhancements, including one that provides unique extra protection against dust and water.

DRS has extensive experience developing systems that meet and exceed military requirements and survive extremely harsh environments around the globe. We haven't taken a regular computer and wrapped it in a tough cover. Instead, we've designed ARMOR Rugged Mobile Computers from the inside out with the latest technology securely protected in a truly rugged, lightweight unit.

Here's one example of a "lesson learned" and our response to it. Everyone knows that connector covers keep out water and dust. But we learned that in the field, covers can be left open. That's why we seal connectors on the inside so that protection against water and dust is always maintained. This patented ShutOut™ technology is one reason why the ARMOR X10 Tablet PC stands up to rugged, real-life conditions.

Speaking of rugged, the market is characterized by a degree of confusion about the meaning of the term rugged. Certain ratings, such as ingress protection, may be used to gauge specific performance criteria. And there are categories like "semi-rugged" that are not easily defined. Users should carefully evaluate levels of protection in light of the specific environment in which the computer will be deployed.
